“A difficult series for me to articulate (and that’s why I paint) but the ‘Tiles’ were one of the first forms that sparked and inspired my steps towards professional painting.
The characteristics of the material and in particular their location, its response to age and decay evokes a need for a personal response. There is something haunting and unsettling about the subject matter to me; something inherent and unexplainable.
“This body of work explores my fascination with the reaction and sensitivity of different materials to stress, wear and staining. Perhaps it’s these very elements which draw me to the subject matter. The construction or deconstruction of the image is certainly similar to that of Nouveau Réalisme and I feel my growing awareness of the influence of the action painting over the process.“I hope you can accept this limited explanation and trust in the works to evoke your own response to my work.‘’
